17.  Julian Assange

is editor-inchief for Wikileaks, a whistleblowing website.  He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and was readers choice for Time Magazine’s Person of the Year.  Since publishing megaleaks about US and UK war crimes, US politicians want him tried for espionage,  which threatens the death penalty.  He has been arrested, jailed and now faces extradition to Sweden on politically motivated sex crime allegations, where he faces no bail and imprisonment until a secret trial.

18.  Sheila Cassidy

is a doctor who gave medical care to a fugitive political opponent of Pinochet’s regime in Chile.  She was arrested and severely tortured without trial along with thousands of other innocent civilians, many whom “disappeared”.   Sheila survived and returned to Britain to bring international awareness to the widespread human rights abuses in Chile in the 1970’s.  She has since campaigned for the hospice movement in the  UK.
