Making it Real
SHARING POWER
Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Hierarchies where one or a few people have authority over others, lead to corruption and abuses.
The more that power is shared and people in positions of responsibility are accountable and transparent to other people, the less likely abuses will happen. In the multitude of counsellors there is wisdom. But our government, military and religious leaders have an image of respectability and democracy which is only a fake shallow veneer. In reality they work to preserve the system and the ruling elite. These people are responsible for invading or justiflying the invasion and exploiation of other countries and for killing hundreds of thousands of people in wars and military operations, as well as their economic policies, with their real motives shrouded in secrecy. And yet so few people question or disagree with these decisions which are made and carried out in the name of the people and of freedom. People are taught to explicity trust authority and leadership and not to rock the boat with challenging questions when they are in doubt.
Those who have been given responsibility must be accountable and transparent to those they are supposed to serve.
“When our media is corrupt, when our academics are timid, when our history is filled with half-truths and lies – our civilization will never be just.
We have to educate each other. We have to celebrate those who reveal the truth and denounce those who poison our ability to comprehend the world that we live in.”
Julian Assange, Christmas speech 2012.
