9. Women of Liberia Mass action for Peace 2003
Armed with only white T-shirts, this movement took on a country at civil war between violent war lords and a powerful corrupt regime. Against tradition, Christian and Muslim women worked together united with the courage of their convictions. They held signs as truckloads of soldiers drove past, the same men and boys who terrorized them. Their signs said, “We love you. Put down your guns.” The women formed a thin but unshakable white line between the opposing forces, and succeeded in bringing an end to the fighting. They prayed for peace, promoted a sex strike, forced a meeting with the president and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace where peace talks with the rebels had stalled, and refused to let anyone leave until a peace deal was done.
