13. Rachel Corrie
Tribute to Rachel Corrie.
In 2003 the 23 year old American was with other peace activists staying in Palestinian homes in Gaza that were threatened with demolition. An Israeli military bulldozer pushed her to the ground where it proceeded to drive over her, fracturing both of her arms, legs and skull. Witnesses say that Rachel was clearly visible to the bulldozer driver, and was doing nothing to provoke an attack. She died in hospital soon after.
14. Steve Biko
was an anti-apartheid activist. He was arrested in 1977 and interrogated by police for 22 hours, tortured and beaten until he fell into a coma. A month later, police loaded him in the back of a Land Rover, naked and in manacles, and drove1100 km to take him to Pretoria prison with hospital facilities. He died shortly after arrival. The police claimed he died from a hunger strike. His death opened many eyes around the world to the brutality of the apartheid regime.
